Step by step, companies and institutions are starting to install defibrillators and train their staff to respond to cardiac arrest. Many provinces already have regulations addressing both areas:

  • Regulations governing the installation of automated and semi-automated external defibrillators outside healthcare settings.
  • And regulations governing the use of defibrillators in public spaces.

Cardiac arrest is the leading cause of premature death in Spain SOURCE: INE – NATIONAL STATISTICS INSTITUTE 02/27/2017. In Spain, 30,000 sudden cardiac arrests occur each year. Nearly 80% take place on public streets, in homes, or at leisure venues. Only 5% of those who suffer a cardiac arrest in public survive. You should know that to assist a person in cardiac arrest and restore a pulse without the risk of irreversible brain damage, we have less than five minutes. Because cardiac arrest is a time-dependent process—meaning the prognosis can improve dramatically if basic resuscitation maneuvers begin as quickly as possible until emergency medical teams arrive.

In the Balearic Islands, we have had Decree 137/2008 of December 12th since 2008, which regulates the use of semi-automated external defibrillators in non-healthcare facilities. Furthermore, the regional health authority is working on regulations governing mandatory installation, which, following patterns in other regions, will likely mean a larger presence of semi-automated defibrillators in public spaces: hotels, shopping centers, sports facilities, transport hubs, etc.

At Emergency Staff, we have been an accredited training provider for over ten years. In our experience, working in a Cardiac Protected space doesn’t only benefit clients; employees themselves can suffer a cardiac arrest, and being prepared until emergency services arrive can mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy. Perhaps that’s why the workers we have trained over the years view this training as an employee benefit offered by their company—one they can even include on their CV. For the company, this accredited training effectively has no cost, as it can be subsidized through Fundae (State Foundation for Training in Employment). Cardiac protection is one of those awareness issues that benefits everyone, both individually and collectively.
