During February, the Local Police Force of Sant Josep de sa Talaia received training in Police Tactical Medical Care.

Over 4 training days, officers learned to use the First Responder Kit (FR Kit) from Emergency Staff in life-threatening emergency situations.

Today, we wanted to feature the testimonial of José Granados, head of the Sant Josep Local Police, who explains firsthand how he experiences his daily work and the importance of this type of training.

Below is the interview we conducted with him. We hope you enjoy it.

First, tell us a bit about yourself, your background, your professional experience, and why you decided to step forward and dedicate your life to being a Local Police Officer in the municipality of Sant Josep?
First of all, I must say that entering this exciting career that I am fortunate to pursue was by no means the result of a lifelong calling. Sometimes in life you just have to get lucky, and on the day this career path was presented to me, I was fortunate enough to cross paths with this profession and with an incredible place to practice it, like Sant Josep. In fact, I think I say this today with even more enthusiasm and passion than 20 years ago when I started this journey.
My academic and professional training has always gone hand in hand with my dedication to this job. It has been an ongoing learning process where I have trained across different areas: administrative, tactical, and, of course, practical.

What do you like most about your work?
I consider myself very fortunate. Not everyone can earn a good living helping people while doing what they love and excel at, but I can. My profession allows me to perform very interesting duties and tasks, far removed from any sense of monotony. The diversity of environments that our island offers means that one night you might be working in a bustling, lively area, and the next day patrolling one of our incredible beaches and natural parks. It’s impossible to get bored.

How do these courses help you develop professionally in the emergency field?
I can’t think of a better service than one where you save someone’s life. You have to keep in mind that local police officers almost always act as first responders, so we need very diverse training—and, of course, the medical care component is crucial. The preparation and knowledge gained in training sessions based on simulating reality and incorporating role-playing into practical training allow us to consolidate what we’ve learned and apply theory to practice in a realistic, safe environment. That is invaluable to us.

How did the training materials in Emergency Staff’s FR-KIT enhance your knowledge and skills during a life-threatening emergency?
Until now, our vehicles carried a very basic first-aid kit, and any urgent medical care was limited to using the semi-automatic defibrillator and improvised means to try to extend the injured person’s survival time. This situation led us to consider how to improve our field equipment—specifically in health emergencies—by assessing and analyzing together with your team what the most common scenarios were and what level of complexity we could handle under stress while applying medical techniques. We concluded that hemorrhage control and cardiorespiratory management were the key pathways to prolonging a victim’s life until technical medical personnel arrive.

Do you think what you learn in this training is important? Why?
Evidentially yes. We respond to many medical emergencies—many of which are simple to manage, where basic care or simply monitoring the victim’s well-being until the ambulance arrives is sufficient. But there are other incidents where giving a person even a few extra minutes of survival time can mean the difference between recovery and death. That is why completing this type of training, and doing so periodically, is essential.

Would you recommend the use of Emergency Staff’s FR-KIT, along with its relevant training, to local police in other municipalities? Why?
Of course! How could I not want for my colleagues what I want for myself? The reasons someone may require medical assistance are extremely varied, and statistics show that these situations are constant. If the numbers speak for themselves, a service like ours must be prepared, and this equipment covers a significant portion of our needs to give us the highest possible chance of success.

What is the defining value of Emergency Staff’s training—based on practical learning under stress-inducing factors during emergencies—compared to other training programs?
Using the role-playing technique I mentioned earlier is something we find extremely interesting, and fortunately, the instructors at Emergency Staff recognized its value. Recreating real-world scenarios in controlled environments allows us to perform near-real exercises where, combined with your expertise and a little engagement from the officers, we consolidate knowledge that is debriefed at the end. This lets us evaluate how we have evolved after acquiring new skills and identify where we can continue to improve. There is no failure, only results, and with dedication and effort, success is guaranteed.

In one sentence, how would you define the training received in Police Tactical Medical Care?
I would define the training as practical knowledge placed at the service of life.
