Following the worst crisis in recent history, the taxi sector plays a pivotal role in the economy and transportation of the island of Ibiza. Restoring tourist confidence in public transport relies on implementing measures focused on offering users a safe service backed by full hygienic and health guarantees.

In response to this commitment, the Consell d’Eivissa, together with Emergency Staff, carried out the project «TAXI: My Transport, Safe», providing island taxi drivers with the knowledge, skills, and equipment necessary to prevent COVID-19, attend to individuals in cardiac arrest, perform CPR correctly, and operate a Semiautomatic External Defibrillator (AED).

The initial training sessions took place between December 1st and 11th at the Driving Examination Center (CEX) in Santa Gertrudis.

«This is crucial because many people pass through their vehicles every day, making taxi drivers one of the groups most exposed to coronavirus and to transmitting it should they have the misfortune of catching it,» explains Andrés García, Training Director at Emergency Staff.

Furthermore, according to Insular Transport Councillor Javier Torres, this initiative will be complemented by a grant program to equip island taxis with defibrillators.

«With this initiative, the Insular Transport Department aims to add value to taxi services, modernize the sector, and establish a cardio-protected island with taxi drivers who can respond during a potential cardiorespiratory arrest, providing immediate care until emergency services arrive, while simultaneously preventing the spread of COVID-19,» stated Javier Torres.

Initiatives of this kind are essential for public safety and boosting confidence for both passengers and taxi drivers themselves.
