This week, the inauguration of the 9th Edition of the Drug Poisoning & Intoxications Course delivered by Ibiza company Emergency Staff took place at the Palacio de Congresos in Ibiza, positioning the island as a leading destination for disseminating action protocols in this field.
Professionals from across Spain, as well as countries like Norway and England, are attending these pioneering sessions in both content and delivery. As Andrés García, Training Director at the company, explains: “Through next Thursday, we will learn to view intoxications from a whole new perspective,” adding that “behind a simple drug intoxication, there can be many underlying issues such as assaults, traffic accidents, or sexual assaults. That is why we teach our students to look far beyond what is visible at first glance.”
To cover the practical modules, Emergency Staff once again partnered with ES Dramatic—a branch of the company created last year to meet these highly specific training needs. The Training Director explains: “We want our students to put into practice what they have learned in the course through high-quality exercises.” A team of actors will handle high-stress simulations, portraying all types of patients that will test the nerves and knowledge of participants to the limit next Thursday, April 21st.
Spanning four days, this course guides healthcare workers to gain a deeper scientific and psychological understanding of these patients. García emphasizes that “behind substance abuse, there can be aggressive patients who may compromise our physical safety, and we must know how to treat them while protecting ourselves.”
The workshops will review psychological aspects, as “patients typically do not want to explain what they took—or perhaps they don’t even know—and if they do, they use slang that practitioners must recognize in order to help them.” On the scientific side, “the majority of recreational drugs consumed have no antidote, so it is vital for healthcare workers to anticipate clinical developments before they lead to fatal outcomes,” explains the Training Director.
During the practical phase of these courses, students will experience high-stress scenarios that medical staff may encounter in real life. These sessions respond, as García explains, “to the hazards under which healthcare workers operate, where in addition to treating an aggressive and intoxicated patient, they may also need to protect themselves.” In this way, the Ibiza company invests in specialized training so industry professionals can effectively handle any challenges arising in their daily work.
