Today face masks are being distributed for the second consecutive day in places such as the Balearic Islands, where yesterday was a public holiday. This protective measure introduces a new element for much of the Spanish population unaccustomed to wearing masks. That is why we are sharing the 3 most important points regarding face mask usage. Remember that maintaining social distancing, washing hands frequently, and coughing or sneezing into your elbow are priority recommendations to avoid catching and/or spreading the virus, to which the use of face masks is now added.
- Most common types of face masks:

Hygienic masks are not recommended for situations involving exposure to infectious or dangerous agents. However, they appear to help limit the spread of the virus. This group includes the masks being distributed at transit hubs and homemade masks; according to the Ministry of Labor factsheet, they are not considered medical devices. In the case of surgical masks, their purpose is to prevent the transmission of infectious agents by the wearer. That is, they are designed from the inside out to prevent the dissemination of microorganisms normally present in the mouth, nose, or throat. The Ministry of Labor factsheet indicates regarding this type of mask that “it does not provide a reliable level of protection” against inhaling particles. It is not considered PPE; it is a low-protection mask that would at most prevent infecting others if we harbor the virus unknowingly during an incubation period or as an asymptomatic individual. FFP filtering facepiece respirators are those designed to protect oneself from infection and effectively protect others. According to their filtration efficiency, there are three classes: FFP1 (78% efficiency), FFP2 (92%), and FFP3 (98%).
2. How to use them:
Before putting one on, wash your hands or use a hydroalcoholic solution. To don the mask, handle it solely by the ear loops/straps and place it covering your nose and mouth as shown in the images above. You must not touch the mask at any time, let alone pull it down to rest on your chin or neck. To remove it, use the ear loops/straps with clean hands.
3. Tips and recommendations
Hair should be tied back so the mask fits properly. If you have a prominent beard, the mask will not seal correctly. Keep in mind that the general population is not accustomed to wearing face masks; if that is your case, remember point two (it’s simple, just a matter of practice). If you are healthcare staff, lead by example—remember that teaching by example is far more effective than words alone.
