Three weeks have passed since the Drug Intoxication – INTDRG and Agitated/Aggressive Patient Control in Hostile Areas – CPAH training at the 2021 Healthcare and Emergency Training Forum.
– The INTDRG training, held May 10–13, comprised 36 in-person hours divided into theoretical classes, practical exercises, and role-playing workshops. Students learned to identify different drug classes, consumption effects, emergency management in drug intoxications, verbal and empathetic healthcare strategies, and to recognize concomitant drug use (drugs taken alongside others). It is a training program dedicated to risk management in substance consumption.
Role-playing workshops are a training methodology we use to help students put themselves in someone else’s shoes by acting, interpreting, and simulating real-life situations.
Andrés García, Training Director, along with the Emergency Staff teaching team, once again guided students through these topics.
– The CPAH training—Control of Agitated and/or Aggressive Patients in Hostile Areas—comprised 21 in-person hours spread across day and night phases on May 14 and 15. The objective of this course is to learn how to manage agitated and/or aggressive patients to anticipate high-risk situations, ensuring mutual safety for responding teams. Through joint teamwork between healthcare personnel and police forces, participants learned how to locate and reach one or more victims in a hostile environment safely and effectively. To achieve these goals, students learned to verbally de-escalate, repel, immobilize, and sedate agitated and/or aggressive patients.
The main focus of this training is early detection through non-verbal communication—de-escalating situations perceived beforehand through patient gestures and body language to anticipate danger.
Over the weekend, students participated in role-playing workshops simulating how to defend themselves against aggression and escape hostile scenarios.
In the words of Emergency Staff’s Training Director, “training is the best therapeutic tool available to us.”
Thank you to everyone who participated in these two courses and to our sponsors, including the Consell d’Eivissa, Santa Eulalia Town Council, Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Gráficas Pitiusas, and Dipesa, for being part of another year of our 2021 INTDRG and CPAH Healthcare and Emergency Training Forum’s second edition.
