Andrés García, co-founder of Emergency Staff, highlights that medical care provided at their “continuous care points” set up inside nightclubs has prevented 97 percent of transfers from these nightlife venues to Ib-Salut public health services.
“Our service is not a hospital, but we have specific training to recognize when a drug intoxication, for example, could turn into something more severe or can be resolved on-site,” comments García, detailing that out of 4,419 individuals treated for any reason between June 2007 and October 2009, only 129 had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Savings of €750,000 for Ib-Salut
According to calculations made by the company, this saved public administration €750,000 in hospital visits alone. “But that is just the tip of the iceberg, considering how many of them might have driven, had an accident, caused sick leave, or suffered fatalities…,” García indicates.
Therefore, he emphasizes the importance of having such services not only in nightclubs or concerts, but also across any recreational or sporting event. “Awareness in this regard has grown, but nightlife entrepreneurs have also been hit by the economic crisis, and we do not generate revenue; we operate as a loss-leader service,” notes García regarding the implementation of this service since he and his partner, Lluís Andrés, founded the company. “Some venue owners invest in making their space safer, but others do not,” he states. In this respect, he regrets that legislation does not mandate on-site medical services in such venues or during specific events.
Data provided by García indicates that Emergency Staff currently employs six full-time staff members whose work he wished to underscore. Between 2007 and 2009, they logged at least 5,213 service hours—”although there is often more than one practitioner per shift”—assisting an average of one person every 1.1 hours for various incidents. Furthermore, he specified that in nightclubs, 70 percent of their interventions are conducted jointly with venue staff.
