Anyone and everyone can learn to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and acquire the necessary knowledge to provide first aid until emergency services arrive. In Europe, around 350,000 sudden cardiac deaths occur out-of-hospital every year, while in Spain the figure stands around 30,000, representing nearly 1,000 cardiac arrests daily. In 80% of cases, these events take place in the patients’ homes.
The survival rate for people who suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is barely 10%. When cardiac arrest occurs, resuscitation maneuvers must begin immediately from the very first moment, as this can significantly increase the affected person’s chances of survival. However, these maneuvers are performed on barely 1 out of every 5 people who suffer a cardiac arrest outside a hospital setting. Hence the vital importance of educating the general public, and dispelling persistent and completely unfounded myths that claim things like “it is better to do nothing so as not to make things worse.”
