We have come across news highlighting various MDMA tablets. Tablets such as Tesla, Philipp Plein, and Soundcloud appear to be the new, most dangerous ecstasy pills and the most consumed due to their high potency. It seems that, as the saying goes, “the more forbidden something is, the more desirable it becomes.” It gives the impression that every summer the chemical substance labeled as “the most dangerous” becomes the most consumed. This is not an isolated phenomenon, given that since ancient times human beings have always been drawn to what is forbidden. Our very nature as human beings pushes us to experiment with what is forbidden to us out of a desire to understand and evaluate the unknown, experiencing its consequences “firsthand.”

Anthropological discussions aside, and focusing on drug intoxications and medical care in nightlife environments—which is our specialty—at Emergency Staff, as always, we strive to be defined by truthful, objective, and verified information, as misinformation leads to poor decisions.

What do we really know about this drug? What are its effects?

Over recent years, in our medical interventions and substance analyses, MDMA—also known as Ecstasy, XTC, Molly, Crystal, E, Beans, or Pills—has presented itself in tablets (scored or unscored) with various colors, logos, and sizes. We also encounter other presentations in the form of granulated powder or small grayish crystals.

Pills like Tesla, Philipp Plein, and Soundcloud are tablets considered a social drug, mostly consumed among young people from various social groups. This drug is usually associated with nightlife environments, big-city raves, and tourist destinations.

Although the composition of this substance varies greatly, they often contain common adulterants such as caffeine, D-amphetamine, ephedrine, piracetam, etc.

Returning to the previous topic and addressing headlines such as “The new ecstasy pills most dangerous for their potency,” we highlight some of their main effects:

During the onset/come-up:

  • Euphoria
  • Empathy
  • Intensification of sensory perceptions and mental alertness
  • Increased libido
  • Visual and tactile alterations

etc.

During an intoxication/overdose:

  • Mood swings (euphoria, dysphoria)
  • Myoclonus (muscle twitches)
  • Cardiovascular stimulation
  • Hyperthermia
  • Anxiety attacks

etc.

According to several analyses of these pills conducted by KnowDrugs, many of these tablets stamped with the logos and shapes of Tesla, Philipp Plein, and Soundcloud contain a high dose of ecstasy and are rated with an extreme risk of overdose.

We remind you that pills of similar appearance may contain completely different substances and/or potencies.

If as healthcare providers we need to assist a patient intoxicated by MDMA, we should act in a manner similar to LSD or 2C-B intoxication by conducting a thorough anamnesis to assess risks and overall medical status.
