The Ibiza-based company works to disseminate its expertise so all emergency teams know how to respond to these situations

IBIZA, June 12, 2013 (IMAM COMUNICACIÓN)

Ibiza company Emergency Staff delivered a training course this week for Ibiza Civil Guard officers titled ‘Immediate Response Teams for Drug Poisoning & Intoxications’. The course was supported by British Vice Consul Sharon Hodges. As Andrés García, Training Director at the company, expressed: “We believe it is vital for all emergency services to know how to act in these scenarios, as a medical team isn’t always nearby and responders must react quickly.”

During this session, the medical specialist condensed Emergency Staff’s six years of field experience in such interventions, fostering a fruitful exchange with attendees: “There are situations where a healthcare worker acts differently than a Civil Guard officer, and we learn a great deal from each other.” Emergency Staff’s Training Director clarified that the term ‘drug’ must reference both legal and illegal substances, “since many people do not consider alcohol a drug,” he pointed out. Through this event, the Ibiza company aimed to provide island officers with “an internal reference guide to translate information provided by an intoxicated patient and make proper decisions,” García specified.

During the course, drugs were classified by origin, onset speed, and induced physiological effects so Civil Guard officers learn to recognize specific behaviors and collaborate more effectively with medical personnel.

As Emergency Staff’s Training Director stressed during the course, the first priority when intervening with an individual who has consumed substances altering the central nervous system is our own physical safety. “Sometimes healthcare workers don’t internalize this enough, which leads us into dangerous situations,” adding that “risk awareness is something security forces understand deeply, and where we vitalize their support.” Andrés García concluded that afterward, “without a doubt, we must safeguard the health of the individual being treated, regardless of whether they later faced fines or legal proceedings for any offense committed.”
