Yesterday, a team of specialized Emergency Staff instructors delivered the Agitated and/or Aggressive Patient Control training at the Medical College of Almería. Medical professionals from primary care, internal medicine, emergency medical services (061), and emergency departments attended this 8-hour morning and afternoon session, training healthcare workers in preventing and properly managing both verbal and physical assaults.

Barely one month into 2019, 13 assaults against healthcare workers have already been recorded. Assaults on medical personnel have risen to the top of concerns for this profession, whose members report feeling unprotected amid a surge of violence and a lack of preventive tools.

Specialized continuous training with a strong healthcare focus is a fundamental preventive tool enabling medical staff to recognize warning signs prior to an assault, learn to de-escalate hostile situations, and learn to flee and escape aggression scenarios through instinctive self-defense techniques. Furthermore, healthcare staff must learn to leverage skills inherent to their clinical practice. All of this is embedded in our training via a protocol we developed over 7 years ago called ACIS: Self-protection – Verbal Control – Immobilization – Sedation.

Focusing on preventive measures such as specialized training, conducting audits of safety procedures in healthcare facilities, and running public awareness campaigns are, in our view, the proper strategies to halt the rise in assaults faced by healthcare workers.
