Last Friday marked the start of the Control of Aggressive Persons and Hostile Areas – CPAH training, taking place within the 2020 Healthcare and Emergency Training Forum. The theoretical portion of this course was held at the Santa Eulalia Conference Center (Palacio de Congresos), while the practical exercises were conducted at one of the hotels in the Invisa Hoteles chain.
The 21 hours of this training spanned across Friday and Saturday, concluding well into the early morning hours. The premise of this course is for healthcare, social, and emergency professionals to attend Saturday’s training session just as they would operate on a regular shift. Consequently, just as these professionals perform medical responses and interventions day or night, the training sessions are conducted under identical real-world conditions.
The Control of Aggressive Persons and Hostile Areas training is delivered by Andrés García—Training Director at Emergency Staff—Marcos Bellver, police officer and instructor at the Madrid Police Academy, and Ricardo Ibáñez, police officer. Both have served as Emergency Staff instructors for years, possessing extensive experience in agitation/aggression management, and are highly regarded by students across all editions of this course.
In the words of the Training Director, “We believe in multidisciplinary training; that’s why we developed CPAH, to provide an effective resolution to agitation/aggression scenarios from a joint POLICE-HEALTHCARE approach, while always ensuring mutual safety for the responding teams.”
Students learned to detect agitation early to anticipate and manage situations presenting potential risks of physical or verbal aggression, as well as strategies aimed at redirecting hostile situations using verbal de-escalation as a primary measure.
Over the weekend, students engaged in various role-playing exercises to repel aggression and escape complex scenarios, as well as integrating response protocols if cornered during, for example, a home visit. Joint action between medical and police teams—such as locating and reaching one or more victims in a hostile environment and/or under active threat safely and effectively—was also practiced across several drills. In the image gallery, you will get a sense of the intensity of this training, which, as mentioned, concluded in the early hours of Sunday morning.
