On the occasion of the Agitated/Aggressive Patient Management training that we will carry out together with Satse Catalunya, Andrés García, Co-owner and Training Director, was interviewed by the communications team of Satse’s Cures magazine. Unfortunately, assaults on healthcare workers are news every day. García presented the company’s ideology and methodology, reaching the final conclusion that a solid amount of training is essential to equip members with skills to minimize and/or eliminate risks to their physical and emotional integrity, when faced with verbal or physical assaults they may suffer in their workplace.

““My students have a very diverse profile, from primary care to emergency departments, but with a common denominator: they are all afraid of being assaulted, and many have already suffered an attack,” explains nurse Andrés García. In this regard, García insists that during the course no “confrontational or martial arts techniques” will be used, as it is a training designed within the “student’s capability framework.” “If techniques are learned that we do not train routinely because we do not work in physical enforcement, it is very easy that on the day we suffer an assault we won’t have the capacity to react in the way we learned,” he explains. For this reason, the instructor chooses to focus on raising awareness and practicing our innate ways of repelling an assault. “We focus on what we actually can do,” he explains. The training will continue to teach how to perform, or assist with, a proper immobilization of the aggressor. “We cannot just jump on top of someone, because risks can arise: that they can’t breathe, or that they suffer a stress-induced heart attack,” he tells us. Patient sedation is a nursing-led technique, and the training focuses on alternative vascular access routes, specifically intranasal.”

According to National Police data, in 2021 a total of 225 assaults on healthcare professionals were reported, representing a 14% increase in assaults compared to previous years. As of today, our training calendar for this year and early next year is fully booked, which indicates that there is a great effort in raising awareness by institutions, as more and more companies choose to train their employees and launch communication plans aimed at raising public awareness.
